Kin and Kilt – Marion, OH – Storefront, Interior, Sign

The Kin and Kilt is a new axe throwing / Scottish pub coming to downtown Marion, OH (our hometown!) Awhile back, the owners came to us with their general design ideas and aspirations for their future company’s storefront. We got right to work drawing up samples that would match the appropriate time period and style of their building. The building is split into two separate storefronts, so the overall façade needed to be applicable to both sides. The façade was made using galvanized and extira. The final design has a cornice spanning across both entrances, 12 custom made fluted columns, recessed panels, and recessed entrances on both sides.

In addition to the storefront façade, we also had the opportunity to fabricate their sign. We experimented with a few materials but ultimately settled on HDU as it is lightweight, easy to mount and we were able to carve and paint the letters. We used this method for the main sign (Kin & Kilt) as well as the smaller signs mounted below (craft beer, wine & spirits, axe throwing.)

Lastly, we designed and fabricated various pieces for the interior. These include: bar and bar top, bar back with shelving, benches, wainscoting, trim and so on. All of the interior woodwork is made using cherry wood and stained to a red chestnut color. When looking at the bar back, you will notice some special little details. One of the recessed panels is actually a hidden door to access the electrical box, there are detailed carvings of deer and thistle mounted above each shelving unit and center piece, and the stained glass window is backlight to provide a soft glow.

The overall goal of this project was to restore an old building and bring it back to its highest quality; all while bringing he feel of Scotland to small-town Marion, OH. The entire project has been a pleasure to work on. This building will truly transport its customers to another time and place.
